 Howdy Horsenamers
Since Ranch Rider's "My Little Foal" competition began at the 2007 Badminton Horse Trials, the entries have been pouring in from far and wide. Ranch Rider and Horse + Pony magazine would like to send out a BIG thank you to all the entrants who put forward a name for the new foal - and in case you'd like to meet him in person, we've added a little pic in our newsletter.
An extra special thank you from the White Stallion in Arizona
The White Stallion Guest Ranch was inundated with entries and it was difficult to agree on a winner - perhaps even more difficult than it had been to begin with. The ranch asked us to send out a big hearty cowboy and cowgirl thank you, to all the entrants. They couldn't have named the foal without your help. In fact, they've even taken some of your suggestions on board when it comes to taking care of the horses, so everyone who entered has made a small difference to the day-to-day life of the horses at the White Stallion.
 The winning horsenamer
The winning entry was from Harley Von-Haidenthaler of Bedfont in Middlesex (UK) who named the foal "Desert Star." Asked why she chose the name, Harley replied, "It reminds me of something that is free to run and play and something that has nothing to hold it down. The desert can be a hard place to live, but it is also beautiful, especially the stars at night." Harley also knows a thing or two when it comes to keeping horses happy and healthy. Harley said, "There are lots of things, but I suppose he must be fed and watered otherwise he will be very sad and die. I also think that you must also give him love and to know he is so loved and very much wanted."
Harley will receive a certificate from the White Stallion Guest Ranch in Arizona, as an official horse namer, a year's subscription to Horse + Pony and VIP membership to the publications website at www.horseandpony.com.
So what's Desert Star up to now I hear you ask? Well, he's trotting around the arena and progressing nicely with his leading lessons. He is certainly enjoying life at the ranch and his favourite human interaction is having his back scratched. Quite a bright spark, the new colt is obsessed with chewing on everything he can get a hold of, so the White Stallion Ranch is working very diligently to curb Desert Star's biting!
